Program Description

Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA) provides a variety of meaningful and useful programs in which consumer/survivors of mental illness can become involved. We develop occupational skills, nurture self-confidence and provide resources for recovery, by creating opportunities for participants to contribute to their own well-being and that of their community. Groups that are offered: dynamic minds; exercise group; YMCA group; positive recovery group; wellness recovery action plan (WRAP); family support group and daily maintenance plan. All of our programs are designed to foster inclusion for its membership, to establish a link to the community, and to give back to the community. We focus on programs that facilitate individual development and integration into the community. We believe that consumer/survivors can be creative and productive members of society and are capable of providing insight into their own problems, especially as they relate to employment, and can use their expertise and experience to resolve these problems. NISA is a not-for-profit, charitable organization and it is consumer run. Model of service is psychosocial rehabilitation, recovery and occupational therapy.

Access Information

NISA is open to all consumers/survivors in the Greater Sudbury area, who are ready to take responsibility for their own recovery. Our programs are peer-driven, yet self-directed, so, in most cases, your client should be able to work on their own or have the motivation to do so. Self-determination is key to NISA's mission: we ask our members to decide for themselves how often they want to participate and how much, based on where they are in their recovery. Some come once a week, others come every day, and others come once a month. Since NISA is a working environment, we ask that our members be actively participating when they come to NISA. Referrals are not required. We are always happy to introduce someone to NISA. Simply give us a call to set up a time for a tour. Usually, we can accommodate you within a day. You can either come with clients or they can come on their own. We will show them around and introduce them to the programs and give them an opportunity to get to know the members and staff of NISA.
