Diversion and Court Support

Program Description

The Mental Health Court Support Program provides support and advocacy to individuals who have a mental illness and are involved in the criminal justice system. Court-based services (court support and diversion) are available to people aged 16 and older, suffering from a mental illness and have a charge being heard at either the Newmarket Provincial Court House or the Bradford West Gwillimbury Court House. Court support, to the client and family throughout the court process and consultation for community organizations and court staff on court matters and mental health issues. Diversion is a pre-trial procedure, where Crown Attorneys in consultation with Mental Health Court program staff, refer the accused to a community mental health service instead of prosecuting. There is also short-term support and advocacy. Model of service is recovery.

Access Information

Referrals are welcomed from all. The person needs to have a serious mental illness or be diagnosable. Interested clients may visit our office in the Newmarket or Bradford courthouses, or contact us by telephone. Telephone interpretation service available for all inquiries in more than 170 languages.
